A veteran Presbyterian Minister for over 35 years, John has spent most of his ministry in the Southeast. Preparing first to be a corporate attorney, his undergraduate study was at Wofford College, where he was a triple major in Economics, Philosophy, and Religion, playing guard on the championship football team. John felt the call to ministry and went to Princeton Seminary instead of law school. After receiving his master’s degree with a concentration in homiletics (preaching), he went on to Chicago receiving his Doctorate in Ministry degree from McCormick Seminary. While completing his doctoral course work, John was able to do additional study under Milton Friedman at the University of Chicago, synthesizing his work in Theology and Economics.
John has led churches from the mountains to the sea, from inner city contexts to retirement communities. Before coming to Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church in 2003, he served for 13 years as Senior Pastor and Head of Staff at a 1,000+ member church in upper state South Carolina. Over the years he has served on various boards for our denomination (Thornwell Home for Children, Presbyterian College, North Carolina Lodge in Montreat) corporate boards (Greenwood Capital Bank, Canal Industries, Inc.) and civic boards (Greenwood County Chamber of Commerce). Along with his church and community work, John has taught classes at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian College, Presbyterian College, Erskine Seminary, and the School of the Laity for Savannah Presbytery.
John has been married to Carolyn for nearly 40 years and they have 3 children, 2 daughters-in-law, and 1 granddaughter. His passions include his faith, his family, mission trips to Guatemala, American history, and golf. When you get a chance, ask him about his autograph collection.
